How long can you drive without MOT?
How long you can drive without an MOT in the UK without breaking the law is a subject of widespread confusion. However, itâs actually a pretty easy grey area to clear up:
If your vehicle is more than three years old, it is illegal to drive it on public roads without an MOT â unless you are driving it to a pre-booked MOT appointment.
There are no exceptions to the rule whatsoever, meaning you are breaking the law if you drive a vehicle without an MOT on public roads for any reason at all. Do so and you risk facing a maximum fine of up to ÂĢ1,000.
How early can you get an MOT?
If you would prefer to get your MOT inspection out of the way early, you can do so up to one month prior to the expiration of your current MOT certificate. Booking your car in for its MOT at least a couple of weeks before your certificate expires is always advisable, in order to allow sufficient time to carry out any maintenance or repairs necessary if it fails.
In the event that your vehicle fails an MOT performed in advance of your current MOTâs expiry date, it is your responsibility to stop driving it until it has been repaired. While you will still be able to legally drive your car until the expiry date of its MOT, the fact that it has failed an early MOT indicates that it is not safe to drive on public roads.
How much is an MOT?
The cost of your vehicleâs MOT will be determined by the garage you book it in with, but the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency imposes a maximum cap that cannot be exceeded.
As of 2021, the maximum MOT fee payable for a standard car with up to eight passenger seats is ÂĢ54.85. This applies to all Class 4 vehicles â other vehicle classes are charged at different rates.
Should any maintenance or repairs be necessary for your vehicle to pass its MOT, weâll provide you with an unbeatable quotation with no obligation to go ahead until youâre happy.
Is driving without MOT illegal in UK?
The short answer is yes â driving without a valid MOT in the UK is illegal. The only exceptions are when driving a vehicle that is less than three years old or when driving a car to its pre-booked MOT. Though even in the case of the latter, you could still find yourself in trouble if the car youâre driving to its MOT is clearly in poor condition and potentially dangerous.
Under no circumstances is it advisable to drive a vehicle without an MOT, as to do so is to put yourself and all other road users at risk. You may also be liable for a penalty of up to ÂĢ1,000 if caught driving on public roads without a valid MOT.
Can you drive on MOT expiry date?
You can, but the only place you should be driving your car to on its MOT expiry date is the test centre. Â At midnight on your carâs MOT expiry date, it will no longer be possible to drive it legally on public roads. You can still drive it to a prebooked MOT appointment (if it is in a decent state of repair), but youâll have left yourself no breathing room whatsoever for any subsequent repairs or maintenance necessary.
We therefore strongly advise booking your MOT at least a couple of weeks in advance of your current certificateâs expiry date.
Can you drive your car away if it fails the MOT?
You can drive your car away if it fails the MOT on the condition that its previous MOT certificate is still valid. This is why it is essential to book your MOT inspection early, just in case arrangements need to be made to carry out important repairs or component replacements.
If your previous MOT certificate is no longer valid, you are permitted only to drive your vehicle to a nearby garage to organise the necessary repairs. Though this applies exclusively in instances where the car is still safe and in good working order.
Cars that fail MOTs on the basis of anything serious or dangerous cannot be legally driven away under any circumstances.
MOT Test Centre
Booking your car into an MOT test centre at least a couple of weeks early could save you time, hassle and even money. If your car fails its inspection, youâll still be able to drive it away from the MOT test centre and organise the necessary repairs.
At MD Autobahn, we work with a trusted local MOT test centre to provide cost-effective MOTs for all types of vehicles. We handle everything on our customersâ behalf for total convenience – arranging the inspection, transporting the vehicle to the test centre and organising any subsequent repairs as necessary.
In the event that your car fails its MOT, weâll be able to perform the repairs and maintenance needed on the spot to keep your car safe and roadworthy.
Call or e-mail anytime to book your appointment at a trusted local MOT centre you can count on.
